What is
Love?
by Ou, Wen Wei
What is love?
Love is respect and devotion,
The perfect harmony of true affection and kindness
one for the other.
It is like clear spring water
that sweetly moistens and silently
penetrates:
Tender feelings flowing continuously
with sincere, endless dedication.
Love is as generous as sunshine,
warmly caring and freely giving,
tolerant, deeply affecting.
What is
love?
Love is respect and
devotion,
The perfect harmony of true affection and kindness
one for the other.
It is like the stars in heaven,
that shine and sparkle:
In their slow course, always in position, firmly
in place,
transcending haughty,
worldly ways.
Love is as bountiful as the harvest:
ploughed in spring, sowed in summer,
reaped in autumn and stored in winter;
only through our persistent labor can
we enjoy
its sweet, rich, intoxicating fruits!
Ah—under magnificent sunshine, neither
darkness nor confusion,
only brightness and openness:
true feelings given without regret or
greed,
complaint or hatred.
Ah—within true love’s realm, neither
narrow-mindedness nor discontent,
only the requirement for tolerance and
understanding,
forgiveness and loyalty.
This, then, is love—real love, noble love: the
love that leads
to beauty and happiness
forever.
