Web proxies and Internet censorship
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:18:45 PM »

I've started this topic in order to avoid distractions to George's thread where people from China were unable to see his pictures hosted on blogspot.com.

Blogspot.com is one of the many websites that is blocked by the Chinese firewall. There are free web proxies that allow you to go around, over, or under the wall to "most" sites, although some like youtube, googlevid, etc. will still be blocked unless you use encryption like https or VPN. Although best known in China, most other countries are implementing firewalls and filters so if you don't know what a web proxy is, even if you live outside China, get ahead of the learning curve now.

Proxies come and go, but this one has been working well for me for several months:

Another is TOR
http://www.torproject.org/

Hotspot Shield creates a virtual private network (VPN) between your computer and the Anchor Free Internet gateway.  http://hotspotshield.com/

The best free one inside of China can not be spelled correctly or this post will be blocked.  Change the '3' to 'e' and you have it. fr33gat3
You'll need to use an encrypted proxy like https://youtubeproxy.org/ in order to find it and download. It's very small, only 400 KB.
It's called fr33gat3, just remember to swap the numbers for letters.
