Preface to the English Edition

By Ou Wen Wei

Offering Images of Wonder and a Real Opportunity

for Good Health

This enigmatic book with its fascinating scenes of the early stages of the cosmos as well as tantalizing views of an eternal future world is now available for English readers. I am confident it will merit their serious consideration.

With The Path of Life as its basis, Pan Gu Mystical Qigong (or Pangu Shengong) was created, which has proven to be a remarkably effective exercise with more than 100,000 practitioners. I believe that as their understanding of this book increases, people will become more and more healthy and happy. Already many Chinese readers have learned a great deal from The Path of Life and with this new knowledge have begun new lives; I am convinced that English readers can achieve results as good as those which Chinese readers have.

My dear readers, when you begin to read this mysterious book with a calm and peaceful mind, the chances are you will discover something new and interesting. You might find, for example, descriptions of an eternal, wonder-filled future world more colorful and carefully reasoned than those in other books you have read. Probably you cannot even imagine how wonderful such a world could be; just reading about it might intoxicate you and leave you eagerly anticipating its coming. You might also find that you become especially energized while you are reading this book, or, contrarily, that you can’t help feeling drowsy. With these unusual sensations and a better understanding of the source of this book, its meaning will become more rich for you.

In autumn of 1974 a kind of force from the universe, which eventually identified itself as Pangu, the so-called Creator of the universe, talked with me in my mind while continually showing me images from the past and the future of the universe. It has now been twenty-eight years since this being began that communication with me and he has never stopped doing so. This strange experience made me gradually realize the true meaning of life and to understand the universe better and better. As a result I have made up my mind to work hard for the wonderful future that has been shown to me for both myself and others. Although the process of tempering I have undergone has been both difficult and agonizing, yet I feel it is worthwhile to take on this challenge. Twenty-eight years ago my knowledge was shallow; at that time I knew only about materialism, not realizing that there are many things in the world that cannot be explained from this viewpoint alone. I therefore became extremely miserable and confused when confronted by this very strange phenomenon. I even regarded myself as a possible psychotic—a mental patient. It is fortunate that I am strong-willed and persistent and would not easily give up. In spite of the miseries involved I was determined to engage in different kinds of experiments on my own body: continuing on my path in order to benefit mankind through my own experiences and discoveries.

I could not force myself to believe in these seemingly imaginary worlds of the past and future I was being shown; instead I could only place emphasis on the practical principles put forward by Pangu: that one should be “kind and benevolent, frank and friendly”; I have been doing this as part of my attempt to verify the theory that “human beings’ physiological structures are closely related with the matter and energy of the universe.” Step by step I have proceeded on this wide and distinctive path of life. Accordingly, it took me thirteen years of hard work to write the long and mysterious book called The Path of Life—without once going back to correct a single word of it. At the same time, based on my sixteen-year experience of self-tempering, I created Pan Gu Mystical Qigong. Countless experiments and much practice have made me realize that there exists a life force in human bodies that actually works as the primary animating power behind people’s survival. The matter—or material—in human bodies plays only a supporting role, secondary in terms of the body’s functionings. A substance cannot be transformed into any part of the human body without the functioning of this basic life force. For example, anyone who lacks this life force is a corpse, and there is no substance a corpse can utilizeto become part of its body. So if a person wants to become truly healthy and live a long life, he or she must try to preserve this life force and maintain its vigor.

Before my experience with Pangu, I had two kinds of serious disorders, stomach ulcers and a skin allergy. Although I had received years of medical treatment, I neither recovered from these afflictions nor succeeded in feeling healthy. After I followed Pangu’s instructions (absorbing positive energy from heaven and earth and the essence of the sun and moon) to enhance my life force and immunity, within two years I became healthy without taking any medicine. From then on I’ve stuck to this way of exercising and have been disease-free for twenty-six years.

Early in 1990, in order to help others become as healthy as I am, I refined this special way of training into a kind of qigong that is simple in terms of movement but rich in philosophy. Thus this mystical experience that originally seemed to belong only to me has progressed into a healing art, and a situation where help is available for people with illnesses and for making people stronger and stronger now exists. Although mysterious, this qigong represents a very real and important transformation that can help people gain a deeper insight into the true meaning of the universe and of their lives. With it readers will be able to see clearly the difference between this book, The Path of Life, and other writings that are fantastic or religious in nature. Well-written legends can often entertain people and even offer them some enlightenment; religious writings can often teach people to be kind or inspire them to rethink their ways and come to a sudden realization. But do we know of any mythological or religious writings that can transform themselves into a methodology for curing sickness and strengthening the body and promoting longevity?

My experience with Pangu has been an extraordinary one, and it can lead not only to the cultivation of people’s souls but also to their physical health. Do you think it is proper of me to share this with you? In order to allow more people to get to know this mystical phenomenon and become kind and benevolent and loving and have stronger bodies and spirits, I have long cherished a dream of having The Path of Life published in English. A few years ago two dedicated students of mine, Robert Anderson and Vincent Chu, offered their help and since then have worked very hard on putting this book into proper and readable English—working on their own time. Thus my wish has finally become fulfilled. From being complete strangers to each other we have become closely united, due to the same desire for the true, the good, and the beautiful to flourish in this world.

My friendship with Robert contains the stuff of legend. He would like to contribute toward the effort of doing good for people’s health and peace. To this end he has been using his abilities as writer and editor in assisting me in my effort. In this society of hustle and commerce that we live in there are few people who would be willing to write like this without the expectation of material reward.

We first met in a workshop I gave in which he and his wife learned Pangu Shengong. Now, after several years of practice, they have achieved good results, not just from the exercise but from hearing me speak (through Vincent’s interpretation) many times on the themes of kindness and benevolence, frankness and friendliness, eternity and beauty. With the understanding he has gained he has worked hard along with Vincent to put my book into English. So we can see that kindness can really overcome the barriers of ethnicity and color.

I believe that people are the same whatever their race or color, their cultures, customs, habits, societies; human nature is the same: we all want to be treated equally and to discover the true meaning of life and our place in the universe. No matter where you come from or live, you will always cherish the dream of being healthy and happy; no matter where you come from or live, you will sense more or less that an invisible power in the universe has actually carefully organized what is happening and what will happen—even if it is all now beyond our understanding. This power gives similar information to different people in different places at different times, providing humanity with much to ponder over, making us all more aware.

In the past, due to my impoverished and limited living conditions, I could neither acquire nor read the book called The Bible. I have since discovered, however, to my surprise, that The Path of Life and it have much in common, and have come to believe that the standard of “kindness and benevolence” put forth by Pangu and the idea of “universal love” put forth by God in The Bible have the same meaning.

Pangu is the equivalent of God. Could this really be true?

My dear readers, please make no conclusions until you have finished reading this book, The Path of Life.

May all people in the world be kind and benevolent!

May all people in the world be healthy and happy!

May all people in the world have an eternal, wonder-filled future!
